Manifesto (english)
The Internet Campaign “PuntoIC” (DotIC) aims at promoting the official assignment of the internet domain extension .ic, to which the Canaries are entitled, as they already have at their disposal the code ISO3166-1, an exceptional reservation due to their different Economic and Tax Regime. This would enable the Canaries to apply to ICANN for their own geographic internet domain, among those so-called first-level domains.
This application is for the Canarian Government to submit, as all governments and public authorities in the world are in charge of managing their geographic domain.
The code ISO3166-1 is part of an excepcional reservation, as are the following codes: AC (Ascension Island), CP (Clipperton Island), DG (Diego García), EA (Ceuta and Melilla), EU (European Union), FX (French Overseas Territories), TA (Tristan da Cunha) and UK (United Kingdom).
The domain .ic is a status to which the Canaries are entitled to. It internationalizes us, makes us visible on the world wide web, it identifies us and promotes our homeland in the social and cultural field at the closest, most international, democratic and widely-spread sphere: the Internet.
The Internet Campaign “PuntoIC” (DotIC) is not a political project of any kind. We focus on technology and the development of the information society, the promotion of our culture, History and traditions, and on the economic development of the business sectors of the islands and international companies operating on the Canaries.
We intend to inform, discuss and officially demand the activation of the relevant mechanisms for the Canaries to obtain their .ic net. We also seek support to this project from institutions, companies, associations, political, social and cultural organizations,… and from individuals who believe in the future of the Canary Islands on the internet.
We, with the support from both citizens and groups, officially demand the Canarian Government:
1) to initiate the relevant procedure so that ICANN formally assigns the .ic domain to the Canary Islands.
2) to establish the technical and management office to register and operate the future internet .ic domains.
3) to set deadlines so that renowned public and private institutions, in the field of culture, education and traditions, are able to apply for general interest domains.
4) to, in due time, open the possibility of .ic registers for companies, social and cultural activities and, finally, for every internet user with a direct connection with the Canaries and/or Canarian organizations abroad.
5) to lay down different actions so that this net can be self-financed, promote the use of the internet on the islands and foster their culture, History, society and natural riches through a strategic plan on the internet.
We formally demand it for the following reasons:
1) A higher internationalization of the Canary Islands on the internet, as a way to promote its culture and identity via blogs, social networks and creative spaces.
2) The possibility that Canarian or Canary-based companies have at their disposal the .ic domain for their business activities and electronic trade derived from the special tax and custom characteristics of the Canaries.
3) The availability of this domain for the Canarian government, agencies, educational network (both public and private universities as well as educative institutions), sport clubs, cultural associations for the promotion of Canarian culture, traditions,… and NGOs and charities based on the Canaries.
4) The development of IT industry on the Canary Islands.
The Internet Campaign “PuntoIC” (DotIC) has no ideologic or economic relation with any political party, private or public institution. People and associations supporting this manifesto state their agreement with this campaing by signing it
